HOW TO TRAVEL TO KLONG PREM PRISON:
ALTERNATIVE #1 : Easiest, least expensive and most pleasant: Take the Chao Phaya Express boat from "downtown" Bangkok to Nonthaburi pier. Ride it to the "end of the line" : Nonthaburi Pier is the last stop. ( NOTE : the Chao Phaya Express is NOT one of the "long-tail" boats )! There are three speeds of "express" boats. They all cost Bt.10 ( ten Bhat ). 1) "one flag" boats. It does NOT stop at all piers ( ask at the dockside for help ) It takes about 45 minutes from downtown to the Nonthaburi Pier. 2) "two flag" boats. It is slower because it makes more frequent stops. 3) "no flag" boats. It stops everywhere. It is possible to take it from a low use "stop" to one of the "one flag" or ("two flag") stops. After reaching the Nonthaburi Pier, take a minibus to Klong Prem Prison. cost = Bt.10 : time 20 about minutes (depending on traffic).
ALTERNATIVE #2 : Fastest : Take a taxi. It costs about 200-300 Bhat from anywhere in downtown Bangkok. BE SURE your driver understands. BE SURE to say "on the meter" !!! ( otherwise you may have to pay up to Bt.700!! ).
ALTERNATIVE #3 : The SKYTRAIN Take the Skytrain to Mo Chit station. Take a taxi from there to Klong Prem gate.
ALTERNATIVE #4 : Take the City-Bus City busses are air-conditioned - no problem with heat. Take a bus from the Victory Monument, directly to the front gate of Klong Prem.
GETTING from the gate to the VISITORS ENTRANCE: Go inside the main gate ( past the water-lilly ponds ) to the visitor registration office. It is straight in front of the gate about 50 meters. Look for a large door. Pass through and to your left, through some small hall ways. Find the desk that administers the passes ( follow other foreign visitors ). Ask for a visitors pass ( in English ). Prepare the application. Show your passport. After you get your visitors pass "stamped", walk back out to the entry hall. Turn left, after a short walk you can pass though to the metal detectors. Cameras and valueables must be left at the metal-detector area. Proceed out the door, along the covered walkway, to the visit area. Present your pass to one of the attendants. Ask when and where to expect the inmates to appear. Prisoners will be let into the visit area, in groups. Try to understand which "group" your friend will be in. Klong Prem is a little confusing as there are few signs in English. The visit area has only a single screen between you and the prisoner ( rather than two ). The foreign visitors section is at the far left-hand end of the visit area. Leaving food, gifts or money is more difficult than at Bangkwang. There is a nice store and bank to the right of the visiting registration office. The attendants have litte foreign language training, but are very kind and helpful. Contact the prisoner's embassy for help with gifts ( this is not needed at Bangkwang ).
RETURNING TO DOWNTOWN BANGKOK:
FASTEST : Taxi to downtown. A "metered taxi: will cost about Bt.200 - Bt.300. Remember ask for a "metered taxi" (ON THE METER PLEASE).
Most Relaxing and cheapest: The Chao Phaya Express to Downtown : However, returning to the Nonthaburi Pier is a little tricky. The best solution is to get a minibus or taxi to the pier. ( OR take a City-bus to the pier). There are three City-busses that go to Nonthaburi ( #63, #114 and #129 ) Most (or all) require a transfer from "downtown Nonthaburi" to the Pier. ( It is about 1 Km from "downtown" to the Nonthaburi Pier ). Ask the bus driver (repeatedly) where to get out. Otherwise, you may be in for a very long walk from the bus storage yard !!!! From the Nonthaburi Pier, take the Chao Phaya Express boat, down-river to Bangkok. There are good connections from the river to the Skytrain. Watch your maps carefully.
