8 Americans Returning Home After Prison Time in Thailand

BANGKOK, Thailand — Eight Americans convicted of drug offenses
have been transferred out of prisons in Thailand after serving eight or
more years. They are to be flown to Los Angeles this weekend.

The five men and three women are being returned under a treaty that lets
the United States bring imprisoned citizens home after serving a portion
of their sentences in Thailand.

On the flight the eight prisoners are to be escorted by US Marshals in a
transfer to the Los Angeles Metropolitan Detention Center. A US
Embassy spokesman in Thailand who asked not to be identified said
that in the US their sentences will be adjusted. That means the eight
could gain their freedom.
