GENERAL NEWS:
Heroin traffickers get life sentencesFour foreign nationals have been sentenced to life in prison for their attempt to smuggle more than 3 kilogrammes of heroin out of the country.
A Thai woman co-defendant, Nam-Oy Nakcharoen, 28, was acquitted by the Criminal Court due to lack of evidence.
The four men were at first sentenced to death. However, the court commuted their sentences to life in prison because their confessions were deemed to have been helpful.
According to the prosecution, Dutchman Marinus Hendrikus Parlevliet, 48, Briton Julian Nicolas Gilbey , 34, and Mrs Nam-Oy were arrested at Don Muang airport on Oct 19 last year after police found 3.3kg of heroin hidden in one of their bags. The three were about to board a flight to Taiwan.
Two other men were later arrested at a Bangkok hotel.
They were Hari Garung Bahadur, 27, and Pore Ghale, 30, both Nepalese.
