By Girish Giri

KATHMANDU, June 7

A majority of human rights organisations decided to ensure the extradition of Nepalese prisoners serving sentences in foreign jails. A meet of 11 human rights organisations in the capital today formed a taskforce to work in that direction. The taskforce, formed to exert pressure on the government for extradition, is chaired by president of Human Rights Academy Krishna Prasad Bhandari.

The move followed the effectiveness of the Convention signed by various European countries to extradite prisoners to their home countries. More than 52 nations from Asia, America and Europe are signatory to the Convention. Countries where a considerable number of Nepalese prisoners are serving sentences, including Australia, Belgium, Thailand, Germany, Italy, UK and the US are also signatory to the Convention.

Speaking in the meet today, human rights activist Padma Ratna Tuladhar said that it will be too late if the efforts to extradite Nepalese prisoners in foreign jails is not initiated now. Similarly, Dr. Gopal Krishna Siwakoti said that the state should initiate efforts in this direction if it wishes to prevent the disintegration of the families of the prisoners back home.

Sometime ago, spokesperson of the Foreign Ministry Madan Kumar Bhattarai had told The Kathmandu Post that let alone the efforts for extradition, the government had not even collected data regarding the number of Nepalese labours serving sentences in foreign prisons.
