MAE HONG SON - An inmate at the provincial prison
went berserk while cooking breakfast yesterday and
attacked a corrections official and a fellow inmate
with a meat cleaver before being shot dead by prison guards.

Awng Fapana, 38, who worked as a cook at the Mae
Hong Son provincial prison, went on the rampage for
no apparent reason, police said.

He slashed prison warden Sangkhom Sangprasert in
the knee with the kitchen cleaver and had begun to
hack an inmate when he was shot and killed, police
quoted Sangkhom as saying. Sangkhom was later
admitted to the intensive care unit of Si Sangwan Hospital.

Awng also tried to cut the tube of the cooking gas
cylinder, which police said may have been an
attempt by him to cause an explosion.

Awng had two more years to serve of a sentence for
attempted murder, police said.
