Most prisoners maintain a small bank account to purchase food, cooking supplies, writing materials, clothes etc. from the prison store. While the prison does supply a minimal diet, many prisoners prefer to supplement their diet with store purchases and gifts from friends and visitors. Without support for food and money, the prisoner is in a really tough spot. We beleive that a minimum equivalent of USD$30 per month is needed. Some "developed" countries contribute much more.
Most do nothing.
REMEMBER - NEVER SEND MONEY IN MAIL OR PACKAGES !!!! First :: it is against the law. Second :: it will be removed during routine inspection.
Prisoners have a basic allowance of food, medical supplies and shelter. However these are very minimal. When they work their wages are paid in script, redemable in store merchandise. Money is difficult to get. Some resort to washing clothes of other prisoners. The minimal cash needs amount to about USD$1/day ( a very minimal amount ). Many survive on far less.
Money may be added to the prisoner's bank account through a variety of methods : DIRECT DEPOSIT with an INTERNATIONAL MONEY ORDER : Prepare and international Money Order made out to : Prisoner name, prison address and building number Make sure you write down the number of the building !!!! Mail it to the prisoner .. The prison agent will make the deposit for you. EMBASSY SUPPORT: Some nations provide minimal financial support for their nationals. Others offer nothing more than a minimal annual visit. Some sample monthly support : Australia ~ 30 pounds Cambodia ~ 0 England ~ 0 ( usually supported by "Prisoners Abroad" ) Germany ~ 200 DM ( about USD $95 ) Nepal ~ 0 USA ~ $50 Ask the Embassy to advise their preferred means of money transfer. When mailing Travelers Checks, get e-mail confirmation of: 1) embassy mailing address 2) prisoner name and building number. 3) instructions about how to sign the "payee" section. 4) reply by e-mail. The Embassy will do the transaction ( and may deduct a small fee ). VISITORS: Visitors may make direct deposits at the prison's main office. For directions Bangkwang Klong Prem Women's Prison. Tell the guards you want to deposit money. You will be directed to the Bank. You can make your deposit(s) while waiting to visit your friend.
